 Once the greeting has been performed in the brokel-dantza, the dancers line up in two lines headed by their leader. As indicated in the general explanation, when dancing the dance of greeting dancers must bear in mind whether it is part of the brokel-dantza or whether it is performed as a dance of courtesy in honour of the lady to be brought onto the rope used by the dancers. In the latter case, the dancer must not turn his back on the lady honoured, and must adapt his steps accordingly.
Although it has become common practice to perform a particular sequence of steps in the dance of greeting, the fact is that the dancer is free to choose whatever steps he prefers. In discussing the aldaira or changes to be performed in honour of the lady during the soka-dantza, Iztueta wrote that: “he [the aurreskulari] moves to meet her, dances three or four of the finest changes in his repertoire before her but ensures that he does not perform any jump with a full turn, for it is most discourteous for a dancer to turn his back on the lady”.
