In Oñate, the Corpus Chrisit festivities are held on the Sunday following Corpus Christi. Researchers have unearthed documents that revealed that the dantzaris were taking part in the festivities on Corpus Christi right back in the 16th century. The dance group currently entrusted with dancing on that day are called Oñatz and consists of eight dantzaris and the leader or maixu. The dantzaris wear red accessories (short skirt, sashes, etc) while the leader wears blue ones.

The dantzaris begin their performance on Friday and dance through the streets and neighbourhoods of the town, as they ask for food and gifts.  On Sunday, the dantzaris dance in a procession and they offer the main Corpus Chrisit performance in the afternoon.  They dance the zortziko San Sebastián, the banakoa, launakoa, zortzikoa, makil-dantza and the arku-dantza, and end their performance with the aurresku or soka-dantza.

The aurresku or soka-dantza is only dance in Oñati in two occasions: during the Corpus festivities, they are usually danced during the dancing on Sunday afternoon. The dance procession is made up by the nine member of the Oñatz dance group and the dancer who was the leader in the dances on Corpus Christi is the aurreskulari.

On the other hand, the members of the Oñatz dance the soka-dantza  on St. John’s Eve, June 23rd. At 22.30, they gather in Olaiturri, behind Oñate University, and dance the San Juan dantza and the soka-dantza after the bonfire is lit.
