St. John’s Zortziko, Bordon-dantza AND Aurresku | The San Juan zortziko, the bordon-dantza and the aurresku are danced in Tolosa on St. John’s Day. The dance group is made up of 25 dantzaris. Very early in the morning, the streets of Tolosa are decorated with ash tree branches. The procession sets off after high mass and the mayor, and the bordon-dantzaris in the interval, dance the San Juan zortziko, while the bells ring out and a gun salute is fired. During the procession, the bordon-dantzaris dance the zortziko twice with no implements in their hands. The bordon-dantza is danced in the afternoon. The structure of this dance is the same as an ezpata-dantza, except that pilgrim's staff or halberds are used instead of swords. Sixteen out of the 25 dantzaris in the group and are linked together using the halberds in four lines, following the structure of the ezpata-danza. The leader, located at the head of the group, collects the four rows of pilgrim's staffs. There are four dantzaris with lances in their hand at the front and back of the group. | | At 16:30, the group starts to march from the old square to Santa Maria square. The bordon-dantzaris go into the church at vespers. With their halberds in their hand, they dance the bordon-dantza as they take part in the procession. When they arrive at the Chapel of San Juan de Arramel, the bordon-dantzaris form a guard of honour which the dignitaries pass under. The procession then returns to the square and the dantzaris dance the bordon-dantza at various points along the route. A guard of honour is formed again and the square and the dignitaries go under it as they leave. After the bullfight, the bordon-danzaris and the dignitaries go to Igarondo and dance the aurresku or soka-dantza there. On September 8th, the feast day of Our Lady, the ingurutxo is danced in the Bedaio neighbourhood of Tolosa. The performance takes place at 19.00 hours and the dance is very similar to ingurutxo that is danced in the Amezketarra neighbourhood of Ugarte. The churchwardens lead the dance and nearly ten pairs of dantzaris follow them.
